Year 5 - Cherry Platts

A warm welcome to Cherry Platts from Miss Thorp and Mrs Ditta, who is our learning support assistant Wednesday-Friday.

We are excited to welcome you into Year 5 and we have high aspirations for all we will achieve together this school year. As we begin our time in Upper Key Stage 2, we will work together to develop our skills of determination, perseverance and resilience to help us move forward in our learning. Our curriculum will give us the chance to ask questions, work as a collaborative team and inspire us to become rounded and aspirational members of Hawridge & Cholesbury School. 

Our key learning will take place every morning, which consists of Guided Reading, Maths and English. Our new learning in English this year will be:

  •          Converting nouns and adjectives into verbs using suffixes -ate, -ise, -ify
  •          Verb prefixes (e.g. dis-, de-, mis-,over-, re-)
  •          Use modal verbs to indicate degrees of possibility (e.g. might, will, should, must)
  •          Use adverbs to indicate degrees of possibility (e.g. perhaps, surely)
  •          Relative clauses beginning who, which, where, when, whose, that
  •          Commas to clarify meaning or avoid ambiguity
  •          Brackets, dash or commas to indicate parentheses

In Maths our new learning this year will be:

  • Numbers to 1,000,000 (Place Value): Scaling up from Year 4's limit of 10,000, pupils explore six-digit numbers, powers of 10, and partitioning millions.
  • Roman Numerals to 1,000: Extending the Year 4 limit of 100 to include symbols like D (500) and M (1,000).
  • Thousandths (Decimals): Moving past tenths and hundredths to recognize thousandths as fractions and decimals.
  • Percentages: Introduction of the concept of percent (parts per hundred) and its direct equivalence to fractions and decimals.
  • Perimeter and Area: Calculating the area of composite rectilinear shapes and measuring perimeter on grids.
  • Volume: Measuring volume using cubic units (cm³) and building understanding of space.
  • Converting Units: Converting between different units of metric measure (e.g., kilometres and metres, grams and kilograms)

We will be creating fascinated learners in our afternoon lessons which inspire creativity, thoughtfulness, understanding and reliance. We will grow in our understanding of the natural world around us as well as growing an understanding of our local history.
