Year 5 - Cherry Platts
A warm welcome to Cherry Platts from Mrs Shead, Miss Saunders, Mrs Hance, Ms Shaw and Miss Coventry!
We are excited to welcome you into Year 5 and we have high aspirations for all we will achieve together this school year. As we begin our time in Upper Key Stage 2, we will work together to develop our skills of determination, perseverance and resilience to help us move forward in our learning. Being part of the upper school now, we will take pride in being fantastic ambassadors for our school and to relish the opportunities this will bring as the year progresses. Our curriculum will give us the chance to ask questions, work as a collaborative team and inspire us to become rounded and aspirational members of Hawridge & Cholesbury School.
During the Autumn term, our learning will take us on a journey from the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons in History to the Solar System in Science and through multi-textured collages in Art. There will be many opportunities for us all to become fascinated by our discoveries as we investigate the past and ask questions about the planets and galaxies of our solar systems. We will discover great texts including The Nowhere Emporium by Ross MacKenzie to help inspire us in our writing. Our Maths learning will give us the opportunity to extend our understanding of place value and become more confident in using written methods to answer the four mathematical operations.
In the Spring term, our Science learning will give us the opportunity to test materials and set up a range of exciting experiments to investigate their different properties. We will consolidate our understanding of how to be safe and make appropriate choices when online, helping us to become rounded and responsible digital citizens. We will travel to the Americas in Geography and learn about different countries in North, Central and South America and present our work in a variety of different ways. Part of our English learning this term will focus on the explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott which will inspire us to be eager to make a difference and relive the bravery and courage of their expeditions. In RE, we will learn all about the Sikh faith and how important the Gurdwara is to the Sikh community. Learning about all faiths helps us to become rounded learners who show respect to all.
The Summer term in Year 5 will be an especially exciting one as we take part in our 3-day residential trip. We will be visiting Woodrow High House. This trip offers us invaluable opportunities to move out of our comfort zones and develop our teamwork and resilience skills whilst having lots of fun taking part in a range of activities from low ropes to Jacobs Ladder, campfires and obstacles courses. We will return exhausted, yet full of stories to tell, first experiences and an ability to reflect on the high aspirations we set for ourselves.
I am really looking forward to the year ahead in Cherry Platts and I know that together we will reach our full potential!
