RE

Intent

At Hawridge and Cholesbury C of E School, Religious Education seeks to make a major contribution to the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils by helping them to acquire a comprehensive understanding of Christianity in the UK and all over the world as well as the other major religions represented in Britain. As a subject, RE fosters and broadens one of our school values of respect. It also helps pupils to develop their own beliefs and values so as to aid them to become confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors to society and work.

RE plays an important role in our broad, balanced and coherent curriculum offering here at Hawridge and Cholesbury C of E School. We follow the Oxford Diocese RE Scheme of Work using the engage, enquire, evaluate and reflect model of teaching. By the end of Year 6, our pupils have had a range of opportunities to explore world religions and viewpoints. Learning happens using a variety of teaching techniques such as use of artefacts, stories, discussion, art, drama, as well as times of stillness and reflection. Our rural setting allows us to explore ‘awe and wonder’ in topics such as Creation in KS1. This comprehensive offering allows all pupils to develop the understanding and skills needed to appreciate and appraise various responses to big questions, as well as help them to develop confident responses of their own.

Where possible, we want our pupils to have opportunities to encounter local faith communities through visits to local places of worship or visits from members of local faith communities.
